Focaccia at White Bear Center for the Arts

Learn how to make focaccia, the quintessential Italian flatbread: a light dough topped with herbs and tomatoes with a touch of olive oil. We’ll plan to make both a traditional focaccia dough and a potato based dough. This is a hands-on class: mixing and stretching dough, assembling and baking in the WBCA wood-fired oven. We’ll partake of your creations with a little wine and beer during the class and we’ll send you home with dough to bake at home.

Cost: $50/person; plus $10 for materials

Holiday Bread at Marine Mills Folk School

Saturday, November 16th - with Bryce Johnson

9 AM to 12:30 PM at Christ Lutheran Church , 150 5th St, Marine on St Croix, MN 55047

You’ll be ready for the holidays with some delicious breads. We’ll make Cardamom Bread and Pain d’Epices. The Cardamom is a delicately flavored yeasted bread. You’ll discover multiple ways to use this versatile dough, and get in some good hand work braiding the dough. The Pain d’Epice is a rye spice bread, the heartiest holiday quick bread you’ve ever had. You’ll take home a loaf of each, plus some cardamom dough to bake at home.

• Intergenerational Age: 10+, each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Praying with Bread

Rescheduled - now December 14th, 9 AM to 1 PM - with Bryce & Jody Johnson

There is a God given rhythm to life which must be honored.  It is like bread making, which has a rhythm of work and rest.  It is at the heart of our spiritual lives, action and solitude. This is a hands-on bread making class interspersed with time for the Spirit to rise within through contemplative prayer.

Information and Registration

Bryce Johnson is a retired pastor. In 2010, he guided the White Bear Lake United Methodist Church to build a community bread oven.  In retirement he has been making and selling bread at Farmers Markets and through his Community Supported Bakery.

Ross Safford is a professionally trained chef and former full-time baker. He uses humor, story-telling, and his vast experience to make bread making simple and fun.

Jody Johnson is a retired psychotherapist and certified Centering Prayer instructor.
